31st Annual Stern Women in Business in person Conference

Active Allyship: Find an Ally. Be an Ally.

Mark your calendars for Friday, April 14th, 2023 and join us for our 31st annual Stern Women in Business Conference.

This year’s SWIB Conference will be about Allyship! We’ll be taking a 360 view of the topic and discussing not only how women need allies, but also how women can be allies. We intend to foster conversations with two goals in mind – educate and actualize. First, we look to grow our understanding of allyship by examining the role intersectionality plays in defining the type of allies we need to be. Second, we hope to make allyship actionable by discussing how to use power in service of others.
The Conference will feature speakers from a variety of backgrounds including advocacy experts, business professionals, and professors specializing in inclusivity. In addition to professional diversity, the Conference will prioritize speakers representing a variety of life experiences and identities in terms of race, age, ethnicity, and gender.

Panel 1: Allyship & Identity

To deepen our understanding of allyship, we must examine how our own identities define the type of allies we need to be. This panel will explore notions of power, privilege, and intersectionality to better understand how social hierarchies impact our role as allies. Panelists from a variety of backgrounds will share how their individual identities have shaped their experiences with allyship, describing both positive and negative examples of allyship. Attendees will not only learn how to more effectively identify allies, but also how to be a better ally to others.

Panelists include Julissa Gutierrez, New York State’s Chief Diversity Officer; Surabhi Lal, Head of SL Collaborative Ventures, Senior Advisor at Jobs For the Future, and Adjunct Professor at NYU Wagner; and Julian Miller, former Director of the White House Internship Program in the Biden-Harris Administration and current Independent Social Impact Strategist. The panel is moderated by Professor L. Taylor Phillips, NYU Stern Assistant Professor of Management & Organizations.

Panel 2: Allyship, Stewardship, & Accountability

Despite our best intentions and awareness, we sometimes fail to act as allies. To help us make allyship actionable, this panel will explore the relationship between allyship, stewardship, and accountability. We will discuss ways to reflect and take ownership of our allyship efforts. Additionally, panelists from both the public and private sector will help us understand how allyship fosters social change and progress on a broader scale. Attendees will learn how to cultivate inclusive cultures and how allyship can drive institutional change.
Panelists include Bushra Amiwala, the First Gen Z Woman Elected to Office in the US and Solutions Consultant at Google; Angelique Bellmer Krembs, Co-Founder and Chief Magic Officer of The Band of Sisters; Anthony Wilder, Director, Civic Engagement and Social Justice at The New School; and Lindiwe Davis, DEI Leader and Strategist at Google. The panel is moderated by Professor Judy Pryor-Ramirez, Clinical Assistant Professor of Public Service and the Director of the Executive Master of Public Administration Program at NYU Wagner Graduate School of Public Service.
